from the Beginning there was Lord Robert Baden-Powell born 1857
then there was a small fortnightly Booklet published 1907 which turned into a published Paperback and a Hardback Edition of
"SCOUTING FOR BOYS" which turned in to a world wide best seller after the Bible and Qu'ran. 1907 saw an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour on Dorset south coast of England.
Young boys clamoured to join as 'Boy Scouts' as soon as the pages were being read ! 100's of 1000's were about in a year and news soon reached the north of Scotland. We have a Ross-shire Journal report of a 1909 Scout Camp at Kildary with a Kit List for the Camp, a Provisions List and a Personal Kit List. New Scout Groups included Avoch, Dingwall, Evanton, Lairg, Muir of Ord, Strathpeffer, Tain, etc. so we know there was a very strong membership here right from the earliest days.
We need to hear of any family that knows of their Grandfather or great, grandfather who was at this camp. The information may be in a family diary or old photos. Please let us know.
